Remote Chemical Process Engineer - Plant Design & Scale-Up

About the Role

Our client, a global leader in innovative chemical solutions, is seeking a highly skilled Remote Chemical Process Engineer to lead critical plant design and scale-up initiatives. This position is fully remote, allowing you to contribute your expertise from anywhere in South Africa to projects worldwide. You will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and scaling up new chemical processes and manufacturing facilities, ensuring efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This role requires a deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, extensive experience with process simulation and design software, and a proven ability to manage complex engineering projects. As a remote team member, you will collaborate closely with international project teams, stakeholders, and operations personnel, utilizing advanced digital collaboration tools.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the conceptual design and FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) for new chemical plants and process units.
• Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for complex chemical processes.
• Perform process simulations and calculations using industry-standard software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS) to optimize design parameters.
• Conduct feasibility studies, mass and energy balances, and equipment sizing for plant components.
• Manage the scale-up process from laboratory and pilot plant data to full commercial-scale production facilities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation) to ensure integrated plant design.
• Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry codes, standards, and safety regulations.
• Provide technical support during the construction and commissioning phases of projects, remotely advising site teams.
• Prepare technical specifications for process equipment and materials.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemical Engineering.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in chemical process design, engineering, and scale-up.
• Extensive experience with process simulation and design software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS, ChemCAD).
• Proficiency in P&ID development and interpretation, PFD creation, and equipment specification.
• Strong knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API).
• Demonstrated ability to manage engineering projects and lead cross-functional teams in a remote environment.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, adapted for remote work.
• Must possess a reliable internet connection and a suitable home office setup for effective remote engagement.
