About the Role

Our client, a leading innovator in advanced materials, is actively seeking a Remote Chemical Process Scale-Up Engineer to spearhead the transition of novel chemical processes from laboratory to pilot and commercial scales. This is a fully remote position, offering a unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking projects without geographical constraints. You will play a crucial role in defining and executing scale-up strategies, ensuring that our innovative chemical processes are robust, safe, and economically viable. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, extensive experience in process scale‑up, and exceptional remote collaboration skills. We are looking for a proactive and analytical engineer who can effectively bridge the gap between R&D and manufacturing, driving successful commercialization of new technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute comprehensive scale‑up plans for new chemical processes from lab to pilot and commercial scales.
• Identify and address critical scale‑up challenges, including mass transfer, heat transfer, mixing, and safety considerations.
• Design and oversee pilot plant operations, troubleshooting issues and optimizing parameters.
• Collaborate closely with R&D chemists, process engineers, and manufacturing teams in a remote setting.
• Perform process modeling and simulation to predict scale‑up behavior and optimize designs.
• Develop PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and operating procedures for pilot and commercial scale.
• Conduct rigorous safety assessments and HAZOP studies for scaled‑up processes.
• Analyze pilot plant data to validate process designs and inform scale‑up decisions.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, scale‑up documentation, and cost estimates.
• Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations throughout the scale‑up process.

Requirements

• Master’s or PhD in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in process development and scale‑up.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience focused on chemical process scale‑up and technology transfer.
• Proven track record of successfully scaling up complex chemical processes.
• Expertise in process simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, Chemcad) and statistical analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of reaction engineering, separation technologies, and process safety.
• Excellent remote communication, project management, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple projects concurrently.
• Experience in advanced materials or specialty chemicals scale‑up is highly desirable.
• Must have a dedicated remote workspace with reliable high‑speed internet access.
• Candidates are welcome from anywhere in South Africa, with proximity to a major transport hub like Upington, Northern Cape considered beneficial.
